Even basic amenties not provided to Tamils - TNA MP

The Sri Lankan government has not provided even basic amenities to the Tamils in that country, MP of the Sri Lankan Tamil National Alliance Seenithamby Yogeswaran has said in India.

The Lankan MP told reporters that the traditional places of worship of 28 lakh Tamils in the country were being destroyed and their culture was at a standstill. Hindu temples were being converted into Buddhist shrines.

Though it was claimed that the civil war had come to an end in May 2009, no political solution had been found for the problems of the Tamil speaking people. Crores of rupees worth of relief materials sent by India have not been distributed to the affected Tamils. India granted assistance for constructing 50,000 houses for internally displaced persons in the island nation, but not even 1,000 houses have been built, the MP said. Yogeswaran said that in order to solve the problem of Lankan Tamils, the government should implement the accord of Rajiv Gandhi and Jayawardene providing autonomy for Tamil areas.

He thanked Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for adopting a resolution in the State Assembly calling for the waiver of death sentence awarded to three men in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the New Indian Express reports.
