MARKSS HEALTCARE, one of the fastest growing pharmaceuticals companies in Sri Lanka organized yet another Continuous Medical Education Prgramme at the Deer Park Hotel in Girithale. This event marked the participation of over 25 doctors including Consultant Paediatricians, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologists, Consultant Surgeons, Consultant Physicians, Medical officers and Family Practitioners in Polonnaruwa District.

The importance of the event was truly accentuated by an informative and a comprehensive presentation made by Dr. Udaya de Silva, Consultant Paediatrician on paediatric emergencies.

This presentation was especially important to all the medical officers and family practitioners alike since they encounter such emergencies discussed therein quite frequently in their day to day practice.

Dr. Udaya de Silva comprehensively discussed emergencies such as poisoning, snake bites, asthma, drug reactions, allergies, anaphylaxis, choking etc. Dr. de Silva’s lecture was admired by the participants to no end as he covered all contemporary and relevant issues to current period in Polonnaruwa.

He spoke on first aid for many conditions. In addition he highlighted the importance of using all opportunities to create public awareness on these matters. He stressed that the most serious complications could be avoided if the public is aware of what to do in certain situations.

For example, in a case of snake bite, it is paramount that the child is rushed to the hospital once the bitten area is washed thoroughly with soap and water if possible with the snake or with a clue to identify the snake.

In case of poisoning, it is important to identify the poison as early as possible. So once a child is found poisoned, it is important to examine the area around the child to find the causative agent that caused poisoning in the first place.

Similarly he discussed issues encountered in the present day practice in meticulous detail.

Commenting on the event, Dr. S. Mahakalanda said that it is MARKSS’s aspiration to ensure that its corporate social responsibility is fulfilled to the fullest. He further said that events of this nature not only add value to MARKSS wellness campaign, but also gets the medical practitioners up and about on present day issues. He especially thanked Dr. Udaya de Silva for an informative and well compiled presentation whilst thanking all doctors for participating in the event despite their busy schedules.
