No individual or vessel can invade the Navy escape from the Sri Lankan coastal area, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral D.W.S. Dissanayake said. Security around the island has been tightened by the Navy as instructed by the Defence Secretary, he told Ada Derana at the Trincomaleenaval base.
Sri Lanka Navy thwarted another illegal migration attempt by 44 Sri Lankans bound for Australia in the early hours today (September 11) off Kulmunai in Eastern Sri Lanka.
Speaking regarding the incident the Navy Commander stated that the sea had been rough in that area at that time and that the boat the group had been sailing in would have sunk within two hours had they not been rescued by the Navy.
41 males, 1 woman and 2 children had been onboard the multi-day trawler from Negombo.
They were brought to Trincomalee Harbour and handed over to Police for further investigations.
“Over the recent years vigilant SLN troops have foiled several illegal human smuggling attempts targeting Australia as destination.” he stated.
Sri Lankans are reminded not to fall into traps laid by human traffickers and take risks at seeking illegal entry into Australia and waist their money, Vice Admiral D.W.S. Dissanayake advised.
