AUDIO: Review all security related legislation and detention – Pillay tells Lanka

Counter measures adopted by states to combat terrorism have frequently been designed with insufficient regard for Human Rights, Sri Lanka is one such case, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Piilay said addressing the 18th session of the Human Rights Council.
For three decades not only did the country suffer the brutal effects of terrorist acts but the response of successive governments over the years has undermined independent institutions, human rights and the rule of law, Pillay stated.
While noting President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s decision to allow some emergency measures to lapse, she however strongly urged the government to follow up with a comprehensive review of all security related legislation and detention.
Earlier Sri Lanka slammed the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay for departing from the clear procedures of the UN Human Rights Council. Read More….
