UN rights council gets report on Sri Lanka

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he is sending a report by U.N. experts who concluded that tens of thousands of people were killed in the last months of the civil war in Sri Lanka to the U.N. Human Rights Council.

Ban said in April he would welcome a mandate from the Human Rights Council, Security Council or General Assembly to launch an international probe into allegations of possible war crimes.

Ban’s spokesman Martin Nesirky said Sri Lanka’s government was informed that the report had been sent to the rights council on Monday.

The panel found Sri Lankan troops had allegedly shelled civilians in a no-fire zone in their push to finish off the Tamil Tigers. The rebels were accused of holding civilians as human shields, AP reports.
