The UK has no regrets over the end of terrorism in Sri Lanka and the LTTE remains a proscribed organization in the UK and across the EU, the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, John Rankin says.
Answering questions from the public via video Rankin states that the relationship between the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka is a very rich and strong one both historical and modern.
He said this when questioned on the ‘anti-Sri Lankan’ stance taken by the British Government.
But we also believe based on our own experience in Northern Ireland that to build a sustainable peace and government needs to address difficult issues from the past and needs to look at the underlying causes of the conflict. For the long term it needs to promote reconciliation between different communities. We will continue to support that in Sri Lanka, he adds.
