Maestro Wijeratne Ranatunga passes away

Veteran ‘Tabla’ player and musician Wijeratne Ranatunga passed away today (September 17) morning.

The body will be taken to his residence at 67/12 Dabare Mawatha, Mirihana in the evening today, Tabla player Manoj Peiris stated.

Wijeratne Ranatunga was a former senior lecturer in music attached to the Aesthetic Faculty of the Kelaniya University.

One of the most accomplished tablaist in the country and whose career spans over four decades, Ranatunga studied at Maharagama Central College.

He is the husband of singer Nirmala Ranatunga.
