All political parties have been able to engage in election canvassing and campaigning activities freely within a situation absent of emergency laws, UPFA General Secretary Minister Susil Premajayantha said.
The forthcoming Local Government election is of significant importance he stated as it is the first election being held after emergency regulations were lifted.
The Minister of Petroleum Industries made these statements during a press conference held today (Sep. 19) at the Mahawali Center in Colombo.
He also highlighted the fact that no major incident of election violence has been reported so far, albeit 33 complaints regarding minor incidents have been received as of last Friday.
Everyone is showing a keen interest towards the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Premajayantha stated adding that “no other political party is capable of governing it (Colombo) detached from the government, because it is the capital of the country.”
As the opposition has been rendered helpless, so much so that they are unable to even find a political slogan, the government has not even had the chance to give reasoning during the election campaign, he said.
The government has brought the opposition to a position where they are at a loss of slogans; he went on to add at the press event also attended by Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara and UPFA Mayoral candidate Milinda Moragoda.
