UPDATE: North Central Province doctors’ token strike withheld

The Government Medical Officers’ Association has temporarily called off the token strike scheduled for tomorrow in all hospitals in the North Central Province, over the assault on a doctor in Anuradhapura.
The Executive Committee of the association is to visit the Anuradhapura Hospital tomorrow to assess the situation, and therefore a decision will be taken afterwards, GMOA spokesman Dr. Naveen de Soysa said.
Doctors in the North Central Province were set to stage a token strike tomorrow (September 3) over alleged inaction by authorities to arrest all suspects responsible for the assault on a doctor in Anuradhapura.
Doctors of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital had launched a token strike on Friday following the assault which took place the previous night.
It was claimed that around 30 supporters of North Central Province Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake had stopped the vehicle of the doctor in the middle of the road in front of a political campaign center, shattered the glass of the car and finally had assaulted the doctor, who was on call.
The doctor was admitted to the Neuro-Surgical Intensive Care unit of Anuradhapura Hospital following the incident.
The Government Medical Officers’ Association stated that doctors of all hospital in the North Central Province will engage in the strike tomorrow, if police fail to apprehend all responsible parties.
However, police said that three persons have been arrested over the incident and were remanded till September 11 after being produced at court.
