An estimated 1,500 persons have perished and close to 13,000 persons injured in around 25,000 motor accidents which have occurred in the country so far this year, police said today.

Driving under the influence of liquor has been the major cause for most of the accidents, police said adding that 23,521 persons have been arrested for drunk driving since January 01 this year.

The driving licenses of 11,085 of them have been temporarily suspended while the licenses of 45 have been terminated, the police spokesman’s office said in a release.

Meanwhile a total of 2048 drivers have been arrested after police strictly implement the law against motorists under the influence of liquor by carrying out 24 hour operations from September 11. At least 15 of them are said to be drivers of public transport buses.
