The United National Party (UNP) today claimed that the Mattala airport is a white elephant like the Hambantota Port and that the Bandaranaike International Airport is at risk of falling apart due to all high-tech equipment being shifted to the newly built airport.
Even the most skilled officials at the BIA have been used for operations at the Mattala airport, UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawadena said.
The parliamentarian stated that there would be no objections if new aircraft were purchased and officials newly recruited without harming the Katunayake airport.
However, due to this thousands of people employed in jobs associated with the Katunayake airport, directly and indirectly, are facing harsh difficulties, Dr. Jayawardena said at a press briefing today.
