UNP MP Sajith Premadasa stated that becoming the leader of the party is not a decision he can make by himself and that it has to be made by the United National Party, party assembly, Working Committee and parliamentary group.

Right now they have all reached a certain decisions and therefore under the existing situation my main target is to bring victory for the party and to serve the people of the country, he said.

Taking part in his first ever live TV political discussion last night on Derana 360, the former UNP deputy leader stated that whether or not he rises to the leadership of the party is a decision that rests in the hands of the assembly and party members and can only be obtained through the opportunity they provide.

When questioned regarding a previous statement by him when he had declared a change would occur in the UNP leadership before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year (in 2012), Premadasa said he had hoped when implementing the amendment to the constitution that a chance will be afforded to the party’s groundwork.

“However, that task was not successful.”

“I think, in a way it was a lack of maturity on my part or whether I was too hasty. However, I intend to learn from these mistakes, shortcomings and walk a mature path,” the Hambantota District MP said.
