At least twenty-four spectators were injured in a stampede when an elephant ran amok during the Perahera (pageant) of the Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya in Badulla last night.
Police said the incident occurred at around 10.40pm yesterday (24) and that 14 women and a child are among the wounded, who have been admitted to the Badulla Hospital.
The elephant was later tranquilized and brought under control, police said.
