
The student arrested for stabbing and injuring the Law Faculty Head of the Open University in Nawala has been ordered remanded till July 02 by the Nugegoda Magistrate, police said.
The female lecturer, who is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital, was stabbed by the student using a sharp object yesterday afternoon within the university premises.
She underwent a surgery yesterday which lasted over 3 hours, a spokesman of the hospital said.
The student involved in the incident is currently being treated at the Kalubowila Hospital under police custody after he had reportedly consumed a drug.
Police spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardena stated that statements have been recorded from 14 persons over the incident.
The suspect is said to be a government doctor who had also studied at the medicine faculty of the Jaffna University.
According to police the accused had failed to submit a report on one of his subjects on time and as a result the divisional head had refused to accept it.
Infuriated the student had stabbed the victim with a knife and consumed an unidentified liquid rendering him ill.
