More than a hundred small shops were destroyed in a fire which broke out at the common market near the Depot Junction in Kilinochchi.
Police said that the fire erupted at around 9.00pm last night (16) and the flames had destroyed most of the shops as well as their contents.
The flames were doused in a joined effort by the Kilinochchi fire brigade, army, air force and police personnel.
Residents say that the prevailing dry weather condition in the area had helped the fire spread further.
Nobody was harmed in the fire while the damages caused by it are yet to be estimated, police said.
Kilinochchi Police has launched an investigation into the incident.
