The university student whose body was found hanging from a tree in the forest area behind the University of Peradeniya had committed suicide, the Judicial Medical Officer determined today.

The student was identified on February 11 as V.K. Nishantha, 23, a student of the university’s Arts Faculty.

The decomposed body was found in a wooded area behind the Marcus Fernando Boys’ Hostel building at the Peradeniya University yesterday (10) while it was suspected that the deceased was V.K. Nishantha from Angunakolapelessa.

He is a victim of a ragging incident which had taken place at the university in 2011 and was a primary witness in the case filed regarding the incident.

Nishantha had been reported missing for the past two weeks while his relatives had filed complaints with Angunakolapelessa Police and Peradeniya Police over the disappearance.
