Over 1,700 drunk drivers nabbed within 20 days

Sri Lanka Police have arrested and charged more than 1,700 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during a special island-wide operation carried out within the past 20 days, with the aim of curbing road accidents during the festive season.
A total of 130 drunk drivers were arrested within the 24 hours as of 6.00am today (April 20) alone while a majority of them are motorcyclists and three-wheeler drivers.
Sixty-seven (67) motorcycle riders, 43 three-wheeler drivers, a bus driver and 19 other drivers were among those apprehended within the past 24 hours, the Police Headquarters said in a release.
Since the special operation commenced on April 10, a total of 1,761 motorists have been arrested on DUI charges while notably 967 of them are motorcyclists, it said.
