Former Sri Lankan cricket captain and star batsman Marvan Atapattu has been appointed as the head coach of the national team while Ruwan Kalpage has been named as the Interim Assistant Coach.
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that Mr. Marvan Atapattu has been appointed as the National Team Head Coach and Mr. Ruwan Kalpage as the Interim Assistant Coach with immediate effect,” SLC said in a statement.
SLC said that these appointments will be for Sri Lanka’s the upcoming Ireland & England tour and the South Africa tour.
Atapattu, who is the current assistant coach of the Sri Lanka team, will take over from Paul Farbrace who resigned this week to take up the assistant coach role with the England team.
The right-hand batsman finished his cricket career with 5,502 Test runs at an average of 39.02 in 90 Tests with a One-day International average of 37.57 after hitting 8,529 runs in 268 matches.
Atapattu scored six double centuries and sixteen centuries in his Test cricket career.
Atapattu had applied for the head coach position when Graham Ford announced he would vacate the job, and had progressed to the final round of interviews in November, before Farbrace was appointed.
Atapattu has been Sri Lanka’s batting coach since for three years, and was promoted to assistant coach in March 2013.
