Man claims top politician assaulted him with ‘cricket bat’

A 69-year-old man, who claims he was brutally assaulted by a group of individuals including a prominent Western Province politician, has been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital for treatment to injuries.

D.M. Piyasena, 69, a resident of Koswatta, Navala, is currently receiving treatment at Ward No. 72 at the Colombo National Hospital, police said.

It has been reported that the attack had taken place over a dispute when the victim had attempted to pluck several King coconut from a tree located near the politician’s residence last evening.

Piyasena, who was admitted to the National Hospital at around 10pm last night, has lodged a complaint with Welkada Police alleging that he was assaulted with a cricket bat.

When inquired about the incident, Colombo National Hospital Police said a man claiming he was assaulted by a politician is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
