The Supreme Court today postponed the verdict of the Munneswaram Kovil priests appeal against the Appeal Court judgment on animal sacrifice for 3 September.
The bench comprised Chief Justices Mohan Peiris, Justice K. Sri Pavan and Buwenaka Aluwihara.
The trustees and Poosaries of the Kovil filed the petition at the Supreme Court to get permission to perform animal sacrifices under an annual slaughter permit, challenging the verdict delivered by the Appeal Court, in 2013, with respect to animal sacrifices near religious places.
The Court of Appeal ordered the police to act against the priests, if animal sacrifice holds within the Kovil premises, violating the terms of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance.
