The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that it will lodge a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) on Monday, accusing the ruling UPFA government for illegally using state employees for election activities.
Accusing ruling party candidates of carrying out attacks on opposition election offices, JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath alleged that they have gone mad in the face of defeat at the upcoming Uva Province polls.
Herath stated that attacks on JVP election offices have still not stopped. He stated that previously the attackers would usually tear down the propaganda material and set fire to them, but now the latest technique is to take away everything they tear down and leave no proof.
“Cutouts, banners and other propaganda material at the front of our Buttala and Wellawaya election offices were all taken away. So we cannot even take a picture because you can’t even tell that there was an election office in that place,” he told reporters on Monday.
The Parliamentarian further said that even state employees have been illegally recruited into election activities and charged that the ruling party is abusing its state authority to send Samurdhi officers, economic development officers and Ayurvedic officers to the Uva province to assist in the UPFA campaign.
He stated that they have informed the Elections Commissioner, in writing, regarding these illegal actions and that when they met him for discussions on Friday (29) they presented all the facts.
“Even he accepts this. He presented more evidence than us,” he said. However, the law has not been implemented and these acts are continuing without an end, Herath said, adding, that when they, as a political party, complain about election violations to the Commissioner, he in turn reveals his sorrows.
The MP said that if the Elections Commissioner is unable to do anything regarding these violations they will complaint to the Human Rights Commission and if necessary they are prepared to pursue legal action.
