Undeclared gold, phones detected at Mattala Airport

A Sri Lankan man has been arrested by Customs officers at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) for attempting to smuggle gold worth over Rs 1.1 million into the country by concealing them in mobile phone batteries. 

Sri Lanka Customs spokesman Leslie Gamini said that the 43-year-old suspect, from Weligama, had arrived from Dubai at around 8.00am today by flight FZ 551. 

Two gold slabs weighing 232 grams and valued at Rs 1,160,000 were found concealed in mobile phone batteries while 60 undeclared mobile phones, worth Rs 32,190 were also discovered inside his luggage, he said. 

The suspect was imposed a penalty of Rs 100,000 and the goods forfeited following the customs inquiry held by the Deputy Director of Customs.
