UPFA wins Badulla District by narrow margin

The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has claimed a narrow win over the United National Party in the Badulla District, according to the final district results which show the ruling party winning 10 out of 19 seats.
The UPFA obtained 209,056 votes (47.37%) while the UNP received 197,708 votes (44.79%) and managed to secure 8 seats from the district.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) secured 1 seat after obtaining 20,625 votes (4.79%), thereby giving the opposition an equal number of total seats as the ruling party.
Meanwhile the Democratic Unity Alliance, a coalition of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and All Ceylon People’s Congress (ACPC), received 5,045 votes (1.14%) in the Badulla District, however failed to secure any seats.
Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s National Freedom Front (NFF) and Sarath Fonseka’s Democratic Party (DP) also failed to secure any seats in the district despite receiving 4,835 and 3,202 votes respectively.
