Five suspects including a member of the Imbulpe Pradeshiya Sabha today surrendered to Balangoda Police over the recent assault on a group of Sabaragamuwa University students, who were engaged in a Satyagraha, police said.
Some 12 students engaged in the Satyagraha campaign at Pambahinna Junction were attacked by a group of men wielding poles and sharp objects on October 10.
The students who were inside a tent came under attack at around 10.30 p.m. while the suspects fled the area after torching the tent.
The wounded students were rushed to the Balangoda Base hospital.
Two police teams were deployed to conduct investigations as some students had identified the suspects.
The police have also drawn their attention on two abandoned motorbikes that were found in close proximity to the crime scene.
The Sabaragamuwa University Students Union accused supporters of a ruling party politico over the attack on the peaceful Satyagraha.
“Some students have witnessed and we have received information that the group was accompanied by the supporters of a ruling party politician,” the Convenor of the Union Rasindu Jayasinghe said.
The Sabaragamuwa University has been closed until further notice, following a tense situation which had prevailed within the university premises, last week. The university was closed after a group of female university students had forcefully entered a boys’ hostel.
