Representatives of the Alliance for Release of Innocent Fishermen Trust on Friday met BJP leader and former Union Minister Subramanian Swamy seeking his help for the release of 79 mechanised fishing boats now in the custody of Sri Lanka, the Hindu newspaper reported.
The boats were impounded after they allegedly transgressed into the Sri Lankan waters for fishing.
The delegation was accompanied by senior Tamil Nadu BJP leader H. Raja.
A memorandum they handed over to Dr. Swamy said that they were concerned about the long-time anchorage of the boats in Mannar, Kangesanthurai and Triconmalle points. The boats could get heavily damaged at these anchorage points given that the Northeast monsoon has set in.
Emerging out of the meeting, the representatives said Dr. Swamy promised to help, saying he would take up the issue with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his next visit to Sri Lanka.
