Deduru Oya overflows, public asked to be cautious

Due to the prevailing heavy second inter-monsoon rains Deduru Oya has overflown and three spillway gates of the river have been opened, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.
Therefore, the DMC requests the general public in Bingiriya, Chilaw, Wariyapola and Nikaweratiya to be cautious, on this regard.
Meanwhile, the DMC has issued landslide warning for ten districts of Badull, Nuwara-Eliya, Kalutara, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Matale, and Kandy.
Senior Scientist at the Landslide Research and Risk Management Division (LRRMD) Dr. H.A.G. Jayatissa said that the people living in these regions need to give special attention on all mountain areas, man-made cut slopes, and roads within the district.
Assistant Director of the DMC, Pradeep Kodippili, said that with the prevailing bad weather condition is expected to continue with in next 48-hours; over 1000 persons in Nuwara Eliya District have been evacuated from landslide prone areas. “The people were evacuated following the instructions from the LRRMD,” Kodippili said.
