President to announce Presidential election today

The Central Committee of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has unanimously decided to nominate President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming Presidential election in January next year.

The decision was taken at the a meeting held last night (19) at the Presidential Secretariat, a source close to the government said. 

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva had proposed the name of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and the decision was seconded by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne.

The SLFP Central Committee too unanimously approved President’s decision to declare the election, and the gazette notification on this regard would be released after 12.00 p.m. today (20).
