President Rajapaksa signs proclamation

President Mahinda Rajapaksa signed the proclamation declaring his intention to hold a Presidential Election seeking another term, this afternoon.

The Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said he has received the proclamation of the President.

The Central Committee of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) yesterday has unanimously decided to nominate President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming Presidential election in January next year.

The decision was taken at the a meeting held last night (19) at the Presidential Secretariat.

A source close to the government said that nominations could be called in December first week and the poll was likely to take place either on 3 or 7 January.
