Britain is leading the International Emmys nominations list, competing for six accolades at tonight’s awards show in New York, in which the controversial Channel 4 documentary ‘No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka’ has been nominated for an award.

A total of 40 nominees from 19 countries will be competing in 10 categories for International Emmys, established to honour excellence in TV programming outside the US.

The UK nominations include Stephen Dillane and Olivia Colman, up for best actor and actress Emmys for their roles in popular crime dramas.

Other British nominees include crime-thriller Utopia (drama series), An Adventure In Space and Time (TV movie/mini-series) about the creation and early years of the Dr Who sci-fi series, No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields Of Sri Lanka (documentary) and Educating Yorkshire (non-scripted entertainment).

No Fire Zone is an investigative documentary about the final weeks of the Sri Lankan Civil War. The documentary covers the period from September 2008 until the end of the war in 2009.

In March 2013, the documentary was screened by its director, Callum Macrae, at the 22nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.
