Malaka Silva, the son of Minister Mervyn Silva, and six other suspects who were arrested on charges of assaulting a foreign couple at a nightclub, has been released on bail by the Colombo Magistrate Court.
The court also prohibited Malaka Silva from entering any nightclubs for the duration of the case, Ada Derana reporter said.
Malaka has been in remanded prison for nearly a month, in connection with the incident, as his bail pleas were repeatedly turned down by the Colombo Magistrate.
He was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) on 1 November following a complaint lodged by the foreign nationals.
The attack incident had taken place the same day at the nightclub in Duplication Road Colombo when the minister’s son had allegedly harassed a foreign woman, thereby provoking her partner who had then attempted to assault Malaka.
However, in response Silva’s security personnel and friends had assaulted the tourist while both parties subsequently filed complaints over the incident.
The CCD on November 17 apprehended six more suspects in connection with the incident including two Ministerial Security Division (MSD) officials attached to Minister Mervyn Silva and four of Malaka’s friends.
