The death toll from the plane crash in Hokandara reached five as the sole survivor of the tragic incident succumbed to injuries at the Colombo National Hospital last night.

Hospital director Dr Anil Jasingha stated that the airman, who had undergone several surgeries after being admitted to the hospital on December 12, was receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) when he passed away.

JKN Chathuranga was the sole survivor after an Antonov plane belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), flying from Katunayake to Ratmalana, crashed in to a rubber estate in the Horahena area in Hokandara East.

Five were inside the aircraft when it crashed and rescue teams recovered four bodies while another airman was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

A thick fog and mist has engulfed the area, it was reported while low visibility was suspected to have caused the plane crash.
