No confidence motion against Ranil on June 9

A motion of no confidence will be brought against Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe on June 9, former Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said on Thursday (28).

The observation was made at a press conference held in Colombo.

“Some 85 opposition MPs have already signed for the motion,” he said, adding that over 100 Parliamentarians are supposed to sign it.

A public rally will be held in Matara on June 12 to endorse the former President ahead of next general election, he added. “For the first time, this rally will be organised by the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).” He said.

“The contemplated no confidence motion against the Prime Minister may hasten the dissolution of Sri Lankan parliament,” a political observer predicted earlier. “The motion will be brought against Wickremesinghe for launching a “witch hunt” against those associated with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and for turning a blind eye to the Central Bank Governor’s unethical conduct,” the New India Express quoted the political observer as saying.
