Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will likely contest under the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) ticket at the forthcoming general election, Parliamentarian Bandula Gunawardena said.

“Rajapaksa has already declared that he will lead the campaign. The opposition leader has also agreed to give us nominations under the UPFA ticket. We will contest under the guidelines of the former President” he told Ada Derana.

Former President Rajapaksa yesterday said at his home in Medamulana that they will contest at the next polls and form a new government by next August.

“The fight that started in Nugegoda has become a major driving force in the country. I have no right to reject the request by people to protect the country and the party. The economic progress that has been stalled will be rebuilt and reenergized,” Rajapaksa said at the event.
