Sri Lankan refugee arrested in India

A Sri Lankan Tamil refugee was today arrested for allegedly “harassing his two daughters” and forcing them to abscond from Mandapam camp near Rameswaram, a top Indian police official said.

DSP B. Muthuramalingam told PTI that the refugee, Robert, who was staying outside the refugee camp, had allegedly ill-treated his daughters after marrying a third time. His first two wives had left him allegedly unable to bear his torture.

Relatives had informed police that the two girls were missing since November 13, forcing the police to dig some part of the camp on the suspicion that he could have murdered and buried them.

However, they could not trace the girls. Robert did not give proper reply to their queries, police said.

Police suspect that he would have ill-treated them and forced them to leave or commit suicide or even murdered them.

But as they could not get any material to substantiate the suspicion, they registered a case holding him responsible for the disappearance of the two girls due to harassment and arrested him, police said.
