The government has allocated the lowest-ever share of GDP to education sector through the Budget 2016, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) Secretary Udaya Gammanpila said.
The Parliamentarian made the observation at a press conference held in Colombo this afternoon (30).
Earlier, the Finance Minister asserted at the Parliament that Rs 90,000 million has been allocated for education (5.41 % of GDP).
However, Gammanpila pointed out that the government has allocated a GDP which is less than the amount allocated from the last year’s budget. “That is why we wanted to bring a no-confidence-motion against the Finance Minister. He attempted to mislead the people,” Gammanpila added.
He also held President Maithripala Sirisena responsible for allegedly bribing the Parliamentarians in a bid to urge them to back the Budget 2016. “He has promised to offer vehicles for those who extend their support for the budget,” Gammanpila claimed.
“Thus, no-confidence-motion against the Finance Minister may also be defeated, but he would not be able to restore his lost dignity,” said Gammanpila.
