Rescued elephant calf…

October 8, 2018

Wildlife officials of Vavuniya had rescued a four-month old elephant calf which had fallen into a well in Namalgama, Vavuniya.

The calf had fallen into well amidst villagers’ attempt to capture it when it had entered the village through the elephant fence. The wildlife officials and villagers had acted immediately to rescue the elephant calf fearing the crocodile, which was also inside the well, would harm the calf.

The rescued calf was inspected and treated by wildlife veterinarians and it is currently in good health condition.

If the wildlife officials fail to find the mother elephant, the calf will be transferred to a secure place, according to the wildlife officials.
