A petition has been filed at the Supreme Court against a resolution adopted by the Northern Province Council seeking a federal solution to the issue of the country’s Tamil community, NPC chairman C.V.K. Sivagnanam said.
The petition has stated that the proposal could give rise to a division of the country and a reemergence of terrorism.
Therefore, four persons including NPC Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran have been asked to appear before the Court on May 12, 13 and 17, C.V.K. Sivagnanam added.
The resolution was presented by C.V. Vigneswaran while the Ministers and members of the council expressed views on the proposal afterwards. The proposal requested the merge of the Northern and Eastern provinces for a federal system of governance under a new constitution.
