The Sessions Court Kuala Lumpur today discharged, but not amounting to an acquittal, a Sri Lankan man on a drug possession charge.
Judge Hasbi Hasan ordered Mohamed Mahdhi Mansoor, 26, a holder of the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR) card, to be released after deputy public prosecutor Nur Hafizah Rajuni informed the court that the prosecution was withdrawing the charge against the accused.
Mohamed Mahdhi had pleaded guilty to a charge with possession of 157 gm of cannabis by the staircase of Block A, Flat Dewan Bandaraya Bukit Bangsar, Brickfields, at 6.05 pm last June 1.
The man, who has been residing in Malaysia for almost a year, was charged under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39 (A)(2) of the same law, which provides an imprisonment for life or for a period of not less than five years, and whipping, if found guilty. — Bernama
