Field Marshal and Minister Sarath Fonseka, who was the leader of the Democratic Party (DP), has joined the ruling United National Party (UNP) on Thursday (30) morning.

The appointment letter was handed over to Fonseka by the Prime Minister a short while ago at the Sirikotha, the UNP headquarters in Kotte.

“From now on, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will be my leader,” Sarath Fonseka said.

He also went on to say he is no longer the leader of the DP. However, Fonseka added the DP will not be dissolved.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said Sarath Fonseka had decided to join the UNP upon his invitation.

This came after the Field Marshal and the Prime Minister held a discussion in this regard on 28 June. The UNP had earlier signed a collective agreement with the DP led by the former Army Commander in February.
