Launching Green Clubs…

The launch of Green Clubs, for the purpose of conserving and protecting the environment, was held at the Hilton Hotel, Colombo today (08).

The event was chaired by Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Internal & Home Affairs and Provincial Councils & Local Government Vajira Abeywardena, Minister of Tourism Development, Wildlife and Christian Religious Affairs John Amaratunga, State Minister of Finance Eran Wickramaratne and several other state officials.

Through the Budget Proposal 2019, a proposal was brought forth to establish community-based Green Clubs in each Divisional Secretariat with the active participation of the society.

The objective of the project is to keep the city/town/village clean and green for sustainable development.

At the national level, the steering committee of the project will consist of the Secretary to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, Deputy Secretary to the Treasury and five members from the civil society.

Meanwhile, each Divisional Secretary will appoint a steering committee at the Divisional Secretariat level.

A total provision of Rs 450 million has been allocated for the establishment of Green Clubs.
