Late President J.R. Jayewardene’s birth anniversary...

The 113th birth anniversary of late President J.R. Jayewardene was commemorated yesterday (17) under the patronage of Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya.
The event was held at the J.R. Jayewardene Centre in Colombo.
Jayewardene was born 17th September 1906 to the lawyer and later Chief Justice Eugene Wilfred Jayewardene and his wife Agnes Helen. He was sworn in as the first Executive President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on 4th February 1978. He held two terms as Executive President of Sri Lanka. Following a strenuous political career spanning over half a century, Jayewardene retired in 1989, when he was 82 years.
