Navy apprehends 10 local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing

The naval personnel have apprehended 10 local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing at two separate locations last evening, the Navy said in a statement today. 


Accordingly, eight persons who engaged in illegal fishing practices in the seas off Kathiraweli using unauthorized nets were arrested by the naval personnel attached to SLNS Kashyapa located in Vakarai in the Eastern Naval Command. 


The apprehended fishermen and their belongings were handed over to the Vakarai Police for further investigations.


On the same day, naval personnel have arrested another two local fishermen with a traditional boat (Wallam) and a Monofilament Net while fishing illegally in the seas off Padeithurei. The arrested persons long with the boat were produced to the Fisheries Inspector in Mannar for onward action.
