New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has announced that his Sri Lankan counterpart Ranil Wickremesinghe will make an official visit to New Zealand this weekend.

Key has said that he and Wickremesinghe would be discussing trade, regional economies and security issues.

“[The visit] is an important step in growing the relationship between our two countries,” he told reporters at his weekly press conference.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka have a “longstanding, friendly relationship”, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade website.

Two-way trade between the countries totals $333m, and is increasing because of Sri Lanka’s growing demand for milk powder, MFAT said.
