President Maithripala Sirisena has directed that Treasury approval is mandatory to Provincial Councillors attending overseas workshops, the President’s Media Division said.
According to a statement issued today (27), it will be mandatory for any Provincial Council member or minister to obtain approval from the Treasury before attending overseas workshops from 2017.
It said that members of all Provincial Councils in the country have been engaging in foreign visits on government expense for more than 20 years.
The President’s attention has been drawn with regard to an expensive tour of Russia by a group of Central Provincial Council members.
Meanwhile the Governor of the Central Province Niluka Ekanayake says that the President has issued instructions to halt the Russian tour of the CPC members.
However, a team comprising 30 representatives of the Central Provincial Council left the country for Russia this morning.
Another group of CPC representatives were set to leave for Russia on October 05, however this was cancelled on the instructions of the President, the Governor said.
