Initial steps for pensions to migrant workers will be taken soon – President

President Maithripala Sirisena says the initial steps for the program to provide a pension to the Sri Lankan migrant workers for their future social security will be taken within next few months.
“This has been an issue taken into discussion for a long period. The current government will implement that program by fulfilling the promises given to the people on the platform of the Presidential Election as well as in the election manifesto”, he said.
The President made these remarks at the national ceremony to grant scholarships to the children of the migrant parents, held Thursday (Dec. 08) at the Temple Trees. The Development Officers of the Divisional Secretariats were presented computers on this occasion, the President’s Media Division said.
The President stated that the government is paying more attention on the migrant workers who contribute the national economy by earning foreign exchange. “The government is committed for the welfare of their families”, he was quoted as saying.
This scholarship program has been implemented for the children of the migrant workers who are registered in Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau. The children who pass the Grade 5 Scholarship, G. C. E. Ordinary Level and G. C. E. Advance Level are provided with these scholarships.
