No presidential polls in 2020 - Rajitha

Co-cabinet Spokesman Dr Rajitha Senaratne says that a Presidential Election will not be held in the year 2020.

The government’s intention is to abolish the executive presidency and ensure passage of a new constitution, he said, addressing the cabinet press briefing in Colombo today (11).

The Minister of Health stated that this is also President Maithripala Sirisena’s objective and that what certain members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party say is not relevant.

Minister Sarath Amunugama recently stated that the central committee of the SLFP had decided that the executive presidency should be maintained and that President Sirisena should also contest the election in 2020.
