P.H. Manatunga has been appointed as the new Chairman of the National Police Commission by the President, the President’s Media Unit said.

Mr. Manathunga, who was the most senior official in the national police commission, received his letter of appointment from President Maithripala Sirisena this afternoon at the President’s Office.

The appointment comes following the resignation of former Chairman of the National Police Commission Prof. Siri Hettige, who stepped down from the Chairmanship due to his long overseas teaching commitment.

However, Prof. Hettige says he will remain as a member of the Police Commission.
