Police open fire on suspects who attempted to flee after snatching a chain

The cops have opened fire at a motorbike Monday after two persons who were on it had attempted to flee after snatching a gold necklace of a woman in Arachchikattuwa.


According to the officials, after being shot the suspects continued to flee and their ride came to an end as the bike collided with a pedestrian on Puttalam - Arachchikattuwa road.


The incident occurred near the Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha at around 8.30 am.


The pedestrian, a woman, has suffered life-threatening-injuries. The pillion rider was injured following the shooting, while the rider of the bike had sustained injuries due to the accident, it was reported.


“Following the accident, the suspects were still trying to flee yet again through the Puttalam lagoon, the officials chased and managed to arrest them,” an official said.


The accident involving the woman was occurred in Keeriyankalliya area.


The woman whose necklace was stolen has been identified as an Ayurveda doctor.


The injured woman and the two suspects are receiving treatment at the Chilaw General hospital.
