A gazette notification has been issued by order of the President to summon the parliament on the 28 April.
The Parliament will then be informed about the decision made to declare the disposing of garbage an essential service.
This would include making the most basic methods of processing waste properly, an essential service.
A special gazette notification was issued last Thursday (20) under President Maithripala Sirisena’s directive, making all garbage disposal services of local government bodies as essential services.
Accordingly a gazette was issued under the Public Security Act Clause NO 16 declaring garbage disposal by any authority of the Public Administration is an essential service.
“This covers garbage disposal, garbage separation, transportation and storage. Any person contravening the order and disturb any of the above activities will be liable for arrest, prosecution and punishable under the law,” a statement said.
