The second term for the 2017 schooling year commenced today (25).
Whilst Government schools and Government-approved private schools closed for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year on the 05 of this month, Muslim schools reopened for the second term earlier this month, on the 19.
Meanwhile, Provincial Director of Education for the Western Province, Srilal Nonis stated that Terrence N. De Silva College and Rahula College, Meethotamulla would not be reopened today (26), as Terrence N. De Silva College was currently being used as a refugee camp for victims of the Meethotamulla landslide whilst Rahula College, Meethotamulla was being utilized as the centre to record public complaints.
Upon an inquiry made by Ada Derana, the Colombo District Secretary, Sunil Kannangara stated that steps had been taken to relocate the people seeking shelter at Terrence N. De Silva College. He added that plans had been made to clean the school premises tomorrow (27) and reopen the school the day after (28).
Sunil Kannangara further stated that whilst Rahula College in Meethotamulla was not within the Danger Zone, it was the responsibility of the Western Province Department of Education to make a decision as to whether or not the school should be reopened for its students.
